WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team has been picked fourth in the Freedom Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the conference coaches.
The Lady Colonels received 33 points in the voting, six behind third place Misericordia, which received two first place votes. Second place Manhattanville received one first place vote while Eastern, last year's conference champions, was selected first and received five first place votes. FDU-Florham was picked fifth, while DeSales, King's and Delaware Valley rounded out the rest of the voting.
Wilkes will look to get back to the conference playoffs again this season with the help of 17 returning players, led by juniors
Megan Clementson (Frederick, MD, Tuscarora),
Lyndsay Ellis (Shavertown, Dallas) and
Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ, Madison).
A first team all-conference and second team all-region pick in 2009, Fissel will look to be the offensive spark for the Lady Colonels after scoring three goals and adding two assists a year ago. Clementson and Ellis will anchor a defense that was third on the conference in goals allowed and goals against average last season. Ellis gives Wilkes another postseason honoree from last year, earning first team all-conference and third team all-region honors.
The Lady Colonels open their season on Wednesday, September 1 when they host Marywood at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the first contest on the new turf field at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
