WILKES-BARRE –
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown, Lake-Lehman) had 19 kills as Wilkes University breezed by King's College 3-0 in Freedom Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night at the Marts Center. Harrison now has 1,207 kills for her career and is three short of breaking the all-time school record currently held by Alicia Vieselmeyer (1,209 career kills).
The Lady Colonels (8-9, 3-0) dominated from the outset, opening up a 7-1 lead in the first game before going on to win 25-15. Harrison got out to a strong start, getting eight kills, while
Casey Bohan (Harding, Wyoming Area) added five more.
King's fought back in game two, taking an early 5-2 lead before the Lady Colonels responded, scoring three and four straight points to take an 11-9 advantage. The teams would go back and forth before Wilkes scored five of the last seven points to earn the win.
Game three was again a struggle, as King's held a 10-9 lead over Wilkes until the Lady Colonels exploded down the stretch, scoring 16 of the final 18 points to get the 25-12 win and sealing the match victory.
Kelly Greenway had 13 assists for King's while Jillian Foster and Heather Brown added 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
Bohan finished with 10 kills while
Kate McGurk (Swarthmore, Ridley) had 23 assists and
Alex Zero (Moscow, North Pocono) added 15.
Allie Kelleher (Sayre, Athens Area) totaled 20 digs and three aces while
Erin Nothstein (Mertztown, Brandywine Heights) had 16 digs. Harrison's 19 kills were on 37 total attacks, accumulating a .432 hitting percentage.
Harrison will look to establish the new Wilkes kills record this weekend when the Lady Colonels travel to Grantham for Freedom-Commonwealth crossover matches with Messiah College and Widener University on Saturday.
