COLONELS WRESTLERS WIN ONE AT NATIONAL DUALS IN IOWA

CEDAR FALLS, IA – The 19th-ranked Wilkes University wrestling team defeated No. 13 Dubuque 27-13 today in the second round of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals. The Colonels earlier fell to second-ranked Wartbug 43-3 while also losing to No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 22-12 later in the evening to finish their trip to the national duals 1-2 overall.

The 11th-seeded Colonels got pins from Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) at 125 and Anthony Dattolo (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) at 149, leading to their 14-point win over Dubuque. Wilkes five other victories in the match came from Mark Uliano (Hazle Township/Hazelton) (133), Ryan Wilson (Manasquan, NJ/Wall Township) (141), Kris Krawchuk (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) (157), Dustin Stough (Friendsville, MD/Northern Garrett) (174) and Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ/High Point) (285), all by decisions.

Against Wartburg, Dattolo picked up the Colonels only individual victory, upsetting Jacob Groth, ranked seventh in the nation at 149 by the NWCA. Dattolo was ranked eighth in the nation by the NWCA coming into this weekend.

In the loss to Stevens Point, Mendoza posted an upset win over Joe Mileski, ranked sixth in the nation at 125 by the NWCA, winning by decision 6-2. Dattolo, who was the most successful Wilkes wrestler with three wins on the day, picked up a 5-3 decision, while Ryan Wilson (Manasquan, NJ/Wall Township) (141) and Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) (197) also picked up victories. Wilson's was a 9-7 win and Oberrender's decision was 6-5.

With the two losses, Wilkes finishes its first ever trip to the National Duals by facing off against some of the best teams in the nation, getting the big upset over Dubuque as its lone victory.

The Colonels are back in action on Thursday, as they host East Stroudsburg University in its first home dual match of the season. Action gets underway at 7:00 p.m. from the Marts Center.
