Steve Finkernagel WILKES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER AGAINST MANHATTANVILLE IN FINAL MINUTES, 4-3 10/22/2011 2:55:00 PM (Box Score) WILKES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER AGAINST MANHATTANVILLE IN FINAL MINUTES, 4-3 EDWARDSVILLE – Alyssa Tourdot scored three goals including the game-winner with 2:38 left in regulation to propel visiting Manhattanville College to an important Freedom victory over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon from Schmidt Stadium. With the loss Wilkes falls to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in league play. Manhattanville improves to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in Freedom games. The Valiants stand in sole possession of fourth place following the contest. Whittington put Wilkes on the board early with her first of the contest at 5:48 when she took a pass from Lauren Pawling (Columbia, PA/Manheim Central) off a penalty corner and fired a shot inside the right post. Manhattanville's Alyssa Tourdot brought the Valiants all the way back scoring twice in a two minute span to take the lead 2-1 with 15 minutes left in the half. Whittington added her second tally of the frame to tie the score at 2-2 taking a Kerryn Redcay (Reading, PA/Wilson) pass off another penalty corner at 21:24. Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) gave Wilkes a 3-2 lead heading into the break when she scored on as penalty stroke just before the halftime buzzer. Amanda DeChent opened the second half of play tying the game at 3-3 at 40:48 when she knocked home a rebound pass Wilkes keeper Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas). The teams would play the remaining 27 minutes scoreless as the 3-3 tie went into the final minutes of regulation. From there, Tourdot took a breakaway pass from DeChent down the left side hitting the back of the cage for the eventual game-winner at 67:22. Wilkes had several corner opportunities in the final minute of play including a corner attempt as time expired. The Lady Colonels managed a shot on goal as time expired and a Valiant defender grabbed the ball from inside the circle setting up a Lauren Ritchey (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) penalty stroke with no time remaining. Ritchey's shot rang off the left post and Manhattanville escaped with the key Freedom win. Wilkes held a 20-17 shot advantage throughout while garnering a season-high 28 penalty corners to Manhattanville's 16 attempts. Davenport finished with eight saves, while Valiant keeper Amy Hilton made 10 stops to record the win in net. Wilkes will return to play Tuesday when the Lady Colonels host Misericordia University in their final Freedom matchup on senior night at 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium. Print Friendly Version
