Steve Finkernagel WILKES MEN’S SOCCER FALLS 4-0 AGAINST EASTERN IN SEASON FINALE 10/31/2011 4:53:00 PM (Box Score) WILKES MEN'S SOCCER FALLS 4-0 AGAINST EASTERN IN SEASON FINALE EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Eastern University scored three goals in the opening stanza and added one more insurance tally in the second to grabbed the final playoff spot in this week's Freedom Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over host Wilkes University Monday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium. With the loss Wilkes ends its season at 6-11 overall and 2-5 in Freedom play. Eastern moves onto postseason play standing 11-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league matches. Mitch Osterhouse played a through ball up the middle to give Eastern a 1-0 lead at 11:05. Six minutes later Josh Martin notched the Eagles second strike with a shot inside the left post from Branden Gross. One more Eastern goal gave the visitors all they would need to hold off Wilkes and secure the playoff berth. Eastern held an 18-10 shot advantage while garnering nine corner kicks to Wilkes' three attempts. Patrick Loube (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) started in net posting, while Kyle Romm (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) entered in relief posting five saves. Eastern's Jon Crowder made two stops, while Matt Lieg split time with Crowder finishing with four stops to combine for the shutout. Prior to the match, Wilkes honored its two senior members TJ Brandt (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) and Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) for all their hard work and dedication to the program over their four year careers. During their time as Colonels, the team made two Freedom Conference Tournament appearances including a championship appearance in 2008. Brandt played in 71 contests earning 55 starts. He posted totals of 17 points on six goals and five assists, including two game-winning tallies. A Biology major with a minor in Chemistry, Brandt plans on pursuing a career in Chiropractics following graduation. Zulkoski played and started in 74 matches in his Wilkes career. He totaled 33 points on 10 goals (three game-winning) and 13 assists. He was named a Second Team All-Freedom performer during his junior season as well as garnering a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association Scholar All-East Region Third Team. A Match and Computer Science major, Zulkoski plans on attending a five-year doctoral program in the computer science field following graduation.
