WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL CRUISES PAST PSU HAZLETON 89-51 IN SEASON DEBUT
 
WILKES-BARRE – Senior forward Paul Huch (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) led five Colonels in double figures with 22 points and six rebounds as Wilkes University cruised to an 89-51 non-conference win over Penn State Hazleton to open the 2011-12 campaign Tuesday night in the Marts Center.
 
With the win Wilkes improves to 1-0 on the year while PSU Hazleton drops to 2-2 overall.
 
Wilkes stormed out to a commanding 18-4 lead with 12:54 left in the first half as Huch buried a three-pointer from the deep corner. Four more points from Huch extended the lead to 24-8 just two minutes later as Wilkes would take a 42-28 lead into the break.
 
The second half proved much of the same as the Wilkes offense was clicking on all cylinders in their home debut. A jumper from Jourdon Wilson (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), followed by another two-point score from Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) up the advantage to 54-37 with 14:04 left in the second frame.
 
The Lions cut the lead down to 13 after a Mike Taylor trey at 56-43 , but the visitors would draw no closer as Wilkes used another 15-3 run late in the stanza to lead by as many as 40 points late.
 
Huch enjoyed a fine start to his senior season finishing with 22 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. He went an efficient 9-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe throughout. Matt Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) followed with 19 points on 7-for-8 shooting, while Wilson tallied 12 points and three assists in his Colonel debut at the point.
 
Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) and Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) rounded out the Wilkes' double figure scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively.
 
As a team, the Colonels shot a blistering 56.7 percent (34-60) from the floor and 6-for-10 from behind the arc. The Colonels also limited their turnovers finishing with 13 on the night.
 
Taylor led PSU Hazleton with 14 points, while Eric Radishofski added 13 points and four rebounds.
 
Wilkes returns to the court Friday and Saturday when they travel to Carlisle, Pa. to compete in the Pizza Hut Tip-Off at Dickinson College. The Colonels open play against the host Dickinson on Friday at 8:00 p.m. Championship and Consolation games are slated for Saturday.
