Steve Finkernagel WILKES MEN’S BASKETBALL RUNS PAST BAPTIST BIBLE 77-57 11/22/2011 8:44:00 PM Box Score WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL RUNS PAST BAPTIST BIBLE 77-57 WILKES-BARRE – Matt Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) and Paul Huch (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) combined for 38 points and nine rebounds to lead host Wilkes University to a 77-57 win over Baptist Bible College Tuesday night in the Marts Center. With the win Wilkes improves to 3-1 on the young season, while Baptist Bible remains winless at 0-4. The Colonels came out firing on all cylinders as Mullins drove the lane for two followed by a Huch three-pointer to give Wilkes a 14-8 lead. The lead grew to nine at 19-10 after Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) canned a deep trey from the top of the key with 10:59 left until the break. After a Craig Thomas (Avenel, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) three-pointer lifted the lead to 22-10 on the ensuing possession, Baptist Bible used the next four minutes to slowly trim the lead down to four points after a Dan Dodd layup inside with 4:34 left in the half. Another layup from Mullins followed by a Huch three-pointer setup the final Wilkes possession of the half. After a missed jumper from Baptist Bible, Mullins went the length of the floor in seven seconds canning a deep trey with no time left as the Colonels took a 39-28 lead to the break. Wilkes opened the second frame with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 17 at 45-28 just three minutes in. A steal and emphatic dunk from Huch with 6:47 left in the game sealed the win for Wilkes as Baptist Bible could not get any closer than 15 points the rest of the way. Mullins continued his fine play to start the year finishing 7-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line adding two steals. Huch went 7-for-15 from the field, including a 4-for-6 performance from behind the arc as Baptist Bible played zone for most of the game. Huch added eight boards, three on the offensive end. Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) was the other Colonel in double figures finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. As a team Wilkes shot 42.6 percent (26-61) and a season-high 43.5 percent (10-23) from three-point land. The Colonels also held a 36-28 advantage on the boards controlling the paint for most of the contest. The Wilkes defense was aggressive causing 19 Defender turnovers throughout. Jordan Greve led BBC with 16 points, four rebounds, and four helpers. BBC leading scorer Luke Peterson, who entered the game averaging 21.7 points per-contest, was held to just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting. Wilkes will remain idle for the Thanksgiving holiday before opening Freedom Conference play Wednesday, November 30th hosting Misericordia University.
