Box Score

WILKES-BARRE – Kendall Hinze (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) had 32 points, but James Jones had 39 and three free throws with no time on the clock by the Aggies lifted Delaware Valley over Wilkes at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon, 82-81.

The Aggies came out firing in the contest, building a quick 11-4 lead through the hot hand of Jones. Wilkes stood strong though, with baskets by Chris DeRojas (Dallas/Bishop O'Reilly) and Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) bringing the deficit back to one point.

With 7:26 left in the half Hinze connected on a long jumper to tie the game at 20. Three minutes later Hinze scored again, giving Wilkes a one point lead that they would hold the rest of the half. Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) hit a three-pointer while Bernard Edmonds (Exeter/Wyoming Area) chipped in a late layup to make the score 36-34 in favor of the Colonels at the break.

Hinze carried Wilkes in the half, scoring 11 points on four-of-seven from the field. Breznitsky and Sheldon each chipped in five points apiece, while each team shot right around 43 percent in the half.

In the second half Wilkes continued to pull away in the first portion of the period. Wilkes did most of its damage offensively by getting the ball inside to Hinze, who shot a high percentage and worked to get Aggie defenders in foul trouble. With 8:45 left to play Breznitsky hit a free throw to give Wilkes a 10 point lead.

In the next 2:45 Delaware Valley went on a 13-3 run, tying the game on a free-throw by Jones. Wilkes answered with many free throws of its own, with Hinze and Huch hitting six of six from the line and Huch hitting a three-pointer to help the Colonels hold a five point lead with 50 seconds left.

With 42 seconds, James Jones hit two free throws, and with 23 seconds left he made a layup to make it a one point game. With 10 seconds remaining Matt Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) went to the line, making one of two shots. Delaware Valley charged down the court and got the ball to the right corner where Jason Goldheimer hoisted up a last second three-pointer with time running out. Goldheimer was fouled on the attempt, and with 0.0 seconds on the clock, stepped to the free throw line for three shots, all of which he made to seal the 82-81 victory.

Wilkes was led by Hinze with 32 points and five rebounds on the afternoon, as well as three assists. The junior went nine-of-twelve from the field and 14-of-18 from the free throw line. DeRojas added 13 points and five assists of his own, while Huch added 10 points and nine rebounds. Each team shot 45.8 percent from the field.

Wilkes will be back in action as they continue their quest for the postseason when they head to Center Valley, Pa. to take on DeSales next Tuesday, Feb. 15. That game will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m.
