WILKES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS 3-1 DECISION AT WIDENER
CHESTER, PA – Visiting Wilkes University took a 1-0 lead after one half of play, but Widener University scored three unanswered goals in the second half to post a 3-1 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon in field hockey action.
With the loss Wilkes falls to 1-2 on the year, while Widener improves to 4-1 on the season.
Shelli Whittington (Elkton, MD/Bohemia Manor) put the Lady Colonels on the board first when she found the back of the cage with 20:38 left in the first half. Wilkes would take the 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half proved to be the difference as Widener scored three straight goals within an eight minute time frame to take a 3-1 lead. Nicole Nardone tied the game at 1-1 off a penalty corner, then added her second of the game to give Widener a 2-1 advantage off a penalty stroke just four minutes later at 45:01. Widener added one more insurance goal at the 53:22 mark to seal the non-league win.
Widener held a slight 13-7 shot advantage, while Wilkes garnered 15 penalty corners to the Prides' six attempts. Jenna Schall (Easton, PA/Freedom) and Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas) split time in net for Wilkes as Schall finished with one save, while Davenport made four stops in net picking up the loss.
Wilkes will return to action Wednesday when they welcome Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown College to the Ralston Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m.
