WILKES FIELD HOCKEY FALLS 3-1 IN SEASON OPENER AGAINST SUNY GENESEO
EDWARDSVILLE – SUNY Geneseo's Kelsey Horan scored two goals and added an assist as the visiting Knights posted a 3-1 win over Wilkes University in the opening game of the Colonel Classic at the Ralston Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
With the loss Wilkes slips to 0-1 on the young season, while Geneseo improves to 1-0 on the year.
Kayla DeAngelis opened the scoring for Geneseo with an unassisted goal at the 6:10 mark of the first half. Horan would then added her first goal 13 minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0. Horan's second tally would come at the 25:12 mark of the first frame to up the lead to 3-0. The Lady Colonels answered at the end of the half garnering a corner attempt with no time left on the clock. Shelli Whittington (Elkton, MD/Bohemia Manor) took a pass from Stephanie Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and beat Knight's keeper Caitlyn Dowell inside the left post to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the break.
Wilkes dominated the scoring chances in the second half as the game was heavily played in the Lady Colonels offensive end. Wilkes was unable to find the scoring touch as Geneseo's defense stiffened to escape with the 3-1 victory.
Geneseo held a 21-10 shot advantage while Wilkes garnered 10 penalties corners to the Knight's seven. Wilkes goalie Lindsay Davenport was excellent in net finishing with 15 saves.
Wilkes will play in the consolation contest tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against the loser of Arcadia and Salisbury.
