SHOVLIN'S 21 LIFTS MEN'S BASKETBALL BY PSU HAZLETON 68-61 IN HOME OPENER

WILKES-BARRE – Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) scored 21 points in his much anticipated return to lead the Wilkes University men's basketball team over the PSU Hazleton Nittany Lions 68-61 Friday evening at the Marts Center.

With the home opening victory, the Colonels improve to 1-0 while PSU Hazleton falls to 1-3.

With 8:51 left to go in regulation, the Lions led the Colonels 51-45. After a Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) three-pointer, the Colonels forced a Lion turnover in the paint and in transition Breznitsky found Shovlin for a three-pointer of his own to tie the game at 51. The two hooked up for another two points as Breznitsky scored on a ten foot jumper from Shovlin to make it a 53-51 Wilkes advantage. After back to back layups by Dwayne Vines and two made free throws by Shovlin, the Colonels found themselves up 57-54 with 4:19 to go in the ballgame.

Two minutes later at the 2:32 mark, Shovlin found Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) on the low block for a 15-foot jumper to make it 59-54. After a Vines layup on a Colonel miscue, Furst rebounded a Breznitsky miss, and put it up for the three point play. After icing the free throw, Furst scored five straight points for the Colonels in a one-minute time span to give Wilkes a 62-56 advantage.

The Lions scored on a three pointer and a layup to attempt the comeback, but fell short when they had to foul to stop the clock. Since they had no fouls to give, it sent Shovlin to the line where he iced six straight free throws to give the Colonels the 68-61 edge.

The Lions were led by Alex Akabogu with a 21 point effort, while Miguel Rodriguez and Dwayne Vines contributed 14 and 13 of their own.

Breznitsky finished with 17 while Furst contributed seven of his own. Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) and Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) led the front court with nine and seven boards respectively.

Wilkes will return to the pitch when they host Baptist Bible College Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
