WILKES BASKETBALL SQUADS OPEN FREEDOM PLAY AT MISERICORDIA WEDNESDAY
 
WILKES-BARRE – The men and women's basketball teams will play at Misericordia Wednesday evening as they open Freedom Conference play. The women will play at 6:00 p.m. with the Colonel men following the game with an 8:00 p.m. contest.

The Lady Colonels are off to a 3-0 start this season after pulling away from Marywood and Shenandoah while cruising past PSU Wilkes-Barre.
 
Wilkes is led by Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) who is recording an impressive 22.7 points per-contest. She is also posting 5.3 rebounds per-game while nailing a team-best eight three pointers. Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) is putting together a strong senior campaign by recording 10.7 points per-contest while averaging a team-best 2.7 steals.
 
Sophomore transfer Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) is contributing a team-best 7.3 boards per-game for the Lady Colonels frontcourt while Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) is posting 4.0 rebounds per-game.
 
Misericordia enters Wednesday night's game with a 3-0 record defeating CCNY to open the season while pulling away from Rosemont in the Seahawk Classic. Most recently, the Cougars won a thrilling 59-58 contest by buzzer-beater over Lycoming.
 
The Cougars are led by Hannah Seely with 12.7 points per-contest while Kayla Sileo is contributing 11.3 points per-game.
 
On the men's side, the Colonels stand 2-1 as they pulled away from Penn State Hazelton in the opener before cruising by Baptist Bible. Wilkes recently fell to Lycoming in an overtime battle 109-102 on Sunday.
 
Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) leads the pack scoring 28.3 points per-contest averaging six boards and eight assists per-game. Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) is recording 12.7 points per-contest while Bernard Edmonds (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) is contributing 12.3 points per-game. Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) is posting 9.3 boards per-game leading the Colonel frontcourt.
 
Misericordia is 2-2 beating Baptist Bible and Marymount in their annual Laurel Line tournament to start the 2012-13 campaign. The Cougars then fell to Scranton and Centenary in consecutive games.
 
Misericordia is led by Steve Artzerounian's 15.7 points per-game while Matt Greene contributes 14.5 points per-contest respectively. Artzerounian is averaging 8.7 boards while Greene is dishing 4.5 assists per-game.
 
Following Wednesday's contests, the Wilkes men and women will host DeSales University at the Marts Center in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady Colonels will play at 1:00 p.m. while the men follow with a 3:00 p.m. contest with the Bulldogs.
