WILKES FIELD HOCKEY BESTS WIDENER 3-2
Edwardsville, PA – The Wilkes University women's field hockey team beat the Widener Pride 3-2 Friday evening at Schmidt Stadium.
The Wilkes field hockey team improves to 3-2 while Widener drops to 1-4.
In the opening half, the Lady Colonels got on the board early. Just two minutes into the opener, Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) took a shot from the left side that deflected off the Widener goalie, and into the net. Nineteen minutes later, at the twenty-one minute mark, the Lady Colonels struck again. This time, Wilkes took the ball by the corner attack. Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) passed the ball into Shelli Whittington (Elkton, MD/Bohemia Manor) who took a shot from the left side, was deflected by a Widener defender, and deposited in goal by Lauren Pawling (Columbia, PA/Manheim Central).
Despite jumping to a quick 2-0 lead, the game did not go without drama. In the second half, the Pride came out determined to even the match. Within the first seven minutes of the second half, the Pride evened the score at two apiece. Meghan Garvey was assisted by Nicole Nardone just two minutes into the half. Then, just four minutes later, Garvey and Nardone added another tally to their performances. Garvey scored on the deflection from Nardone near the middle of the circle. Five minutes later, the Lady Colonels got back on top with a Kerryn Redcay (Reading, PA/Wilson) goal. Redcay was on the attack when Bevans took a shot that the Widener goalie managed to kick away, right in front of Redcay, who then slapped the ball into the left post. The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Colonels return to action Tuesday at Juniata College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
