WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS FOURTH STRAIGHT AT FDU-FLORHAM, 63-59

MADISON, NJ – Playing without leading scorer junior Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) (23.5 ppg), visiting Wilkes University used a balanced offensive attack only to fall short at FDU-Florham 63-59 Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.

Wilkes falls to 7-9 overall and still is searching for its first Freedom Conference victory at 0-6. FDU-Florham improves to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in league games.

Wilkes kept things close in the first half thanks to the outside shooting of a pair of freshmen Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) and Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston), with Wizar receiving his first career start in the place of Shovlin. Wizar canned a three-pointer to give Wilkes its only lead of the frame early and Stravinski buried his own from long range to keep the Colonels within striking distance at the half, down 29-23.

Another trey from Wizar to start the second half cut the FDU advantage to three, 29-26 with 18:46 left. Just three minutes later Wizar's third three-pointer made the FDU lead three, 32-29 with 16:55 remaining.

After FDU built the lead back to eight, Brendon Sheldon made good on two free tosses and Wizar drilled his career-best fifth trey to put Wilkes down three, 45-42 with 8:32 on the clock. An 8-0 run over the next four minutes put the game out of reach for Wilkes as FDU held on for the Freedom victory.

Wizar led the offense scoring a career-high 18 points including a 5-for-10 performance from long range. Stravinski followed with a career-high 12 points and four rebounds in extended minutes, while fellow rookie Jim Brackett (Narvon, PA/Garden Spot) finished with six points and seven rebounds.

Trevor Sykes led three Devils in double figures with 19 points and five rebounds. Will Green added a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Mike Williamson capped the scoring with 12 tallies.

Wilkes returns to Freedom play Wednesday at Eastern University. Gametime is set for 8:00 p.m.
