DAVIDS, PA – Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) and Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) combined for 37 points as visiting Wilkes University rallied late down 10 points only to fall at Eastern University 68-65 Wednesday night in Freedom Conference action. Wilkes drops to 7-10 overall and 0-7 in Freedom contests, while Eastern improves to 4-14 overall and records its second league victory on the year. With Eastern holding a 10 point advantage with 5:12 remaining, the Colonels began their furious comeback. Jim Brackett (Narvon, PA/Garden Spot) started the rally with a bucket and foul inside off a Breznitsky assist. Following the Brackett three-point play, Furst scored in the paint and Breznitsky continued the run with a jumper in transition to cut the lead to four, 62-58 with 2:50 left. After a free throw from Eastern, Breznitsky canned a deep three-pointer to bring the Colonels to within two, 65-63 with :20 on the clock. With Wilkes forced to foul, the Eagles Malcolm Garrison sank two free throws to up the advantage to four, 67-63. On the ensuing Wilkes possession, Furst added another bucket inside as Wilkes trailed 67-65 with :14 remaining. Another Wilkes foul put the Eagles at the line where Ben Connor missed both shots at the stripe keeping the Eagles up two with just ten second left and one last shot for a Wilkes tie or eventual winner. Breznitsky got a look at a three-pointer with :3 but the shot fell off the rim and Eastern corralled the rebound where the Colonels would foul. Anthony Bertolino made one of two free throws sealing the victory for the Eagles. The first half saw Eastern open up a 34-27 lead as the Eagles shot 41.9 percent (13-31) using nine offensive rebounds to account for 12 of the 34 tallies. Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) led Wilkes with nine at the break including a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line to keep the Colonels within striking distance. Breznitsky finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting . Furst followed with 18 points and four rebounds. Wizar added nine points, while Brackett contributed a career-best 13 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Anthony Parenti led three Eagles in double figures with 20 points and seven rebounds. Wilkes returns home Saturday for a Freedom tilt against Delaware Valley College at 2:00 p.m. Wilkes will honored the 20th annual Hall of Fame class at halftime of the contest with a formal ceremony to follow after the conclusion of the game.
