SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS SHORT, COLONELS SUFFER 67-54 LOSS TO AGGIES
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team came out firing in the second half, but their rally came up short as the Delaware Valley College Aggies prevailed with a 67-54 win Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.
With the loss, Wilkes falls to 7-11 and 0-8 in Freedom play while Delaware Valley improves to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
After being down by 21 points to start the second half, the Colonels put together a couple runs of their own to get back to within five. Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) hit a deep trey to kick-start the Wilkes offense. After an Aggie layup and a Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) free throw, Breznitsky struck again for jumper from behind the arc. Devin Dunn (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) laced two free throws and Jim Brackett (Narvon, PA/Garden Spot) made his backdoor layup setting the stage for another Breznitsky three-pointer, making it a 15-point game. On the next Colonel possession Breznitsky hit his jumper and free throw after absorbing the foul for the three-point play. Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) joined the mix for a layup on a dish from Breznitsky to make it a ten-point game with 12:56 to play.
A three-pointer from Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) and a free throw from Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) brought them to within six, but the Aggies countered with two free throws from Zach Sly. A Furst layup and two made free throws from Breznitsky would get the Colonels to within five at 9:45 to play, but the Aggies heated up and hit 9-of-14 free throws to expand their lead and earn the victory.
Delaware Valley was led by Francis Arnold and Jeremy Beckett with 16 and 13 points.
The Colonels were led by Breznitsky's 19-point effort while Wizar tallied nine points of his own.
Wilkes returns to the court on Wednesday when they host Misericordia at 8:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
