NO. 8 WILKES WRESTLING CLAIMS SIX TOP SIX FINISHES AT MESSIAH OPEN
 
GRANTHAM, PA – The No. 8 Wilkes University wrestling team claimed six top six finishes including four wrestles with second place finishes at the Messiah Open Saturday.
 
With most of its starters resting for dual match play, Wilkes had a strong showing through the ten weight classes in the event.
 
Griffin Panicucci (Wantage, NJ/High Point) took a 8-0 major decision before a 6-2 decision win to reach the semifinals at 133-pounds. Panicucci would fall in the semifinals and later settle for fourth place.
 
At 157, Phil Racciato (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) won four straight bouts including two pins and a major decision to reach the finals. Racciato would fall in the finals to settle for second place.
 
Chase Martino (Hixson, TN/The McCallie School) used a 15-2 major decision and a pin to reach the semifinals at 174-pounds. Martino then posted a hard-fought 11-10 decision in the semifinals before falling in the final bout for a second place finish.
 
At 184, Levi Veppert (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) claimed third with a 5-1 win in the third place bout. David Oberrender used two decision and a pin to reach the finals of 197-pounds. Oberrender would settle for second when an injury halted his day early. William Fletcher (Ottsville, PA/Palisades) was the final top six finishers for the Colonels at 285. Following a bye, Fletcher posted a 6-2 and 4-2 decision to reach the finals where he would fall 7-4.
 
Wilkes has a quick turnaround hosting a quad match tomorrow (Sunday) at 11:00 a.m. at the Marts Center including RIT, Mount Saint Vincent, and Washington and Jefferson.
