WILKINS THREE LIFTS COLONELS TO FIRST FREEDOM WIN OVER MISERICORDIA, 67-66

WILKES-BARRE – Junior Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) scored a career-high 16 points including the game-winning three-pointer with :12 left to lift Wilkes University to a 67-66 win over Freedom rival Misericordia University Wednesday night in the Marts Center.

With the win Wilkes moves to 8-11 overall and records its first Freedom victory standing 1-8 on the year in league play. Misericordia drops to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in Freedom contests.

Misericordia led most of the second half before back-to-back buckets from Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) and Chris Shovlin (Kingston, PA/G.A.R.) gave Wilkes its first lead of the frame 60-59 with 4:53 left. Breznitsky canned a deep three-pointer to up the Colonel advantage to four following a Misericordia turnover. An inside score and two free throws brought the Cougars back giving Misericordia a 65-64 lead with under two minutes remaining.

The teams would trade baskets over the next 1:25 stretch before Misericordia's Steve Ware was fouled driving to the hoop. Ware made one of two from the charity stripe as the Cougars led 66-64 with :38 remaining.

From there, Shovlin played pick-and-pop with Wilkins who drained the game-winner from the top of the key with :12 left. Misericordia called timeout to draw up one last play, but a Cougar three-point attempt fell off the mark as Wilkes secured its first Freedom victory in 2012-13.

Breznitsky matched his season-high finishing with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting including a 3-for-5 performance from behind the line. Wilkins enjoyed a career night inside for Wilkes posting 16 points and 11 rebounds while adding four blocks defensively.

Misericordia was led by Ware's 19 points and 11 boards. Matt Greene ran the offense contributing 17 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. Misericordia cooled off shooting from long range in the second half (1-5) after drilling eight three-pointers in the first half (8-12).

Wilkes takes to the road Saturday with a Freedom matchup at Manhattanville College at 3:00 p.m. in Purchase, N.Y.
