FOUR FIRST HALF GOALS LIFT WILKES FIELD HOCKEY OVER EASTERN, 4-3
ST. DAVIDS, PA – Four different Lady Colonels scored in a four-goal first half to lift visiting Wilkes University to a 4-3 win over defending Freedom Conference champion Eastern University Saturday afternoon.
Wilkes improves to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in Freedom games, while Eastern drops to 6-8 on the year and are tied with Wilkes at 1-2 in conference play.
Wilkes wasted little time grabbing the lead when Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored just :45 into the contest off an assist from Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central). Ream's corner pass found Frankel's stick where she ripped it through past Eagles goalie Jennifer O'Neill.
Ream added to the Wilkes lead scoring on an unassisted play 15:18 into the first half. Eastern found the back of the net with 17:09 on the clock to cut the Lady Colonels advantage in half, 2-1. Two more unanswered Wilkes goals in the first frame gave the Lady Colonels a comfortable 4-1 advantage heading into the break. Danielle Distefano (Rochester, NY/Hilton) found herself free on a breakaway and dribbled past the goalie for Wilkes' third tally. Ashley Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) added the fourth goal off an assist from Frankel at the 23:40 mark.
Wilkes held the three-goal advantage deep into the second half before Eastern rallied for two quick goals with under two minutes left. Wilkes held on the final minute of play to escape with their first conference win of the season.
Goalie Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) finished with 11 saves to record the victory in net for Wilkes. Both teams garnered 18 shots on the afternoon while Eastern managed 12 penalty corners to Wilkes' six attempts.
Wilkes returns to the field Tuesday when the Lady Colonels travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a non-league matchup against Susquehanna University at 7:00 p.m.
