Wilkes improves to 10-11 overall and 3-8 in Freedom play. FDU-Florham drops to 10-12 overall and sees its league mark even at 5-5. Wilkes opened the contest on a 14-2 run as Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) capped the rally with a jump hook with 13:30 on the clock. Another bucket inside, this time Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) canning a jumper from the block pushed the Colonel advantage to 20-9 with 5:42 left in the first half. After an FDU-Florham turnover, Shovlin and Furst played pick-and-pop as Furst drained a three-pointer at the top of the key giving Wilkes a 23-9 lead. Back-to-back threes kept the Devils in the game, but a three-point play from Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) off a nice assist from Shovlin sent the Colonels to the break up 32-20. FDU-Florham began the second frame on an 8-2 run to close to within six, 34-28. Another Wilkins bucket inside kept Wilkes ahead 41-36 with 11:08 on the clock. FDU-Florham cut the lead to one, 43-32, when Mike Williamson hit a jumper with 5:13 remaining. That's the closes the Devils would get to tying the game as Wilkes closed the game on a 17-0 run. A steal and Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) three-pointer capped off the rally before Shovlin scored in transition and at the free throw line twice. Another Shovlin layup put the game out of reach as Wilkes secured its third straight Freedom win keeping its playoff hopes alive. Shovlin led the Colonels with a game-high 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists shooting an efficient 7-for-13 from the floor. Wilkins followed with 11 points and eight boards, while Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) came off the bench to score eight points and grab seven rebounds. Wilkes shot 43.5 percent (24-53) from the floor including four three-pointers. Defense was key down the stretch for Wilkes not allowing an FDU-Florham made field goal in the final 5:13 of the contest. Williamson led FDU-Florham with 13 points on 5-for-17 shooting. Trevor Sykes added 10 points and two rebounds. Wilkes returns to the court Saturday for its final home game of the season hosting Eastern University at 3:00 p.m. in the Marts Center. The game will also be senior day for the two Colonel seniors Tyler Breznitsky (Freeland, PA/MMI Prep) and Cliff Richardson (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken). Print Friendly Version
