WILKES FIELD HOCKEY UPENDED IN COLONEL CLASSIC CONSOLATION 7-2 AGAINST GENESEO

EDWARDSVILLE – Senior Kayla DeAngelis scored three goals to lead visiting Geneseo State University to a 7-2 victory over Wilkes University in the consolation game of the 2013 Colonel Classic at Schmidt Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes drops to 0-2 on the season, while Geneseo evens its mark at 1-1.

Wilkes opened the scoring when Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) scored her second tally in two days off an assist from Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central). Geneseo tied the game at 1-1 just six minutes later as Kayla DeAngelis scored the first of her two first half goals.

After the Knights took a 2-1 lead, Wilkes answered to tie the game for the second time when Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) cleaned up a Ream shot inside the circle with 23:32 on the clock. Geneseo then used four straight goals to end the frame to take a 6-2 cushion to the break.

The teams went scoreless through the first fifteen minutes of the second half before Geneseo's DeAngelis scored her third tally of the contest to put the game out of reach at 7-2 with 56:34 on the clock.

Geneseo held a slim 28-22 shot advantage, while Wilkes garnered 10 penalty corners to the Knights' nine attempts. Wilkes goalie Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) finished with 14 saves, while Knight's keeper Dayna Mercer recorded the win making 10 stops in net.

Wilkes returns to the field next Saturday competing in the Salisbury Invitational in Salisbury, Maryland. Wilkes opens with host and fifth ranked Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
