NO. 5 WILKES WRESTLING FINISHES 6TH AT NWCA NATIONALS WITH 1-1 RECORD ON DAY TWO
 
DES MOINES, IOWA – The No. 5 Wilkes Wrestling team finished day two of the NWCA National Duals with a 1-1 mark settling for sixth place at the event. The Colonels opened the day with a 24-16 victory over No. 19 Mount Union to reach the fifth place match. There Wilkes fell 25-19 to No. 3 Wabash College (IN) in a battle of two top-five nationally ranked teams.
 
Wilkes sees its overall dual record move to 13-3 following the 3-2 showing at the national event.
 
In the opening match against Mount Union, Wilkes collected a forfeit at 125-pounds to move out in front early. Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) notched his 98th career victory at 133-pounds scoring a 6-4 decision over Jeremy Border.  Following a major decision win by Mount Union at 141, Mark Hartenstine (Easton, PA/Easton) continued his unbeaten streak at the event earning a 3-0 decision over Ben Kazmir as the Colonels led 12-4 after four bouts.
 
Two straight decision wins at 157 and 165 moved Mount Union closer at 12-10. At 174-pounds, Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) was awarded an injury win at 5:49 and Marlon Duque (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) was just edged out in overtime 7-5 at 184-pounds keeping Wilkes ahead 18-13. Another decision win at 197 for Mount Union setup the final bout that would decide the match. William Fletcher (Ottsville, PA/Palisades) pinned Lucas Dies  in 3:45 to secure the victory for Wilkes.
 
The fifth place bout featured the second straight day that Wilkes would wrestle a top five team. Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) began the match with a 17-2 technical fall over Tommy Poynter. Mendoza moved just one win away from 100 for his career after pinning Robbie Carter in 4:54 at 133-pounds.
 
Wabash collected a decision win at 141, but Wilkes continued to build its lead using a Hartenstine technical fall (16-0) at 149 to take a 16-3 advantage. From there, Wabash earned wins in the next five bouts including extra points (falls) at 165 and 184 to grab a 25-16 lead entering the heavyweight bout. Nicholas Dawson (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville) posted a 12-5 decision to conclude the wrestling for Wilkes at 285.
 
Wilkes returns home this week for the start of the second semester and will be in action Saturday competing in the Will Abele Invitational in Collegeville, Pa.
