NO. 6 WILKES WRESTLING TAKES SECOND AT WILL ABELE INVITATIONAL; DAWSON CROWNED 285-POUND CHAMPION
 
COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The No. 6 Wilkes University wrestling team scored a total of 104.5 team points on way to second place at the 2014 Will Abele Invitational held on the campus of Ursinus College Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels wrestled at least one wrestler at each of the ten weight classes garnering nine top four finishers including the 285-pound champion Nick Dawson. Host Ursinus took the team championship with 140 team points, while Wisconsin-Platteville followed Wilkes in third place with 70.5 total points.
 
Dawson began the day with a 5-1 decision before pinning his next opponent in 2:30 to reach the finals. There he would meet teammate Matthew Transue who scored two falls and a major decision in the semifinals to reach the title bout. Dawson claimed the title with a medical forfeit in the championship match.
 
Levi Veppert (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) posted a second place finish at 184-pounds falling in the finals to Ursinus' Daniel Manganaro. Veppert used an 8-6 decision in the quarterfinals and a 12-2 major decision in the semifinals to reach the championship bout.
 
174-pounds saw three Colonels claim top four finishes. Chase Martino (Hixson, TN/The McCallie School) settled for second place after breezing through the bracket to the finals using two pins and a 7-2 decision in the semifinals. Martino would fall 9-2 to Robert Scamuzza of Ursinus in the finals. James McNally (Scranton, PA/Scranton) and Nicholas Lynch both wrestled back through the consolation bracket to meet each other in the third place bout. McNally took the match by medical forfeit.
 
At 157-pounds, Stephen Turner (Plains, PA/Coughlin) enjoyed a strong showing finishing in second place. Turner began the day with a 15-0 technical fall before pinning his opponent in :46 in the semifinals. Turner would fall to Richard Janski of Ursinus in the finals 13-1.
 
Matthew Evans (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) was the final top four finishers for Wilkes taking fourth at 133-pounds. Evans wrestled back through the consolation bracket with 7-6 and 7-5 decision wins to reach the third place bout where he was edged out 4-3.
 
Wilkes returns to dual match competition Tuesday when the Colonels travel to Division II East Stroudsburg for a match at 7:00 p.m. Wilkes needs just four more dual match victories to reach the 800 win plateau in the program's history.
