WILKES-BARRE – Sophomore Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) poured in a game-high 25 points including seven three-pointers to power host Wilkes University to a 72-71 Freedom Conference victory over Eastern University Wednesday night at the Marts Center.

The Colonels record their second conference win of the season moving to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in league play. Eastern falls to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in conference games.

Wilkes held a nine point advantage at the break thanks to four of Wizar's seven three-pointers in the frame. Wilkes also had its way on the glass in the first half outrebounding Eastern 22-11 including 11 offensive rebounds leading to 12 points.

Eastern battled back to tie the game at 53 with 11:42 remaining after Malcolm Garrison made one of two free throws from the line. A 7-0 Wilkes spurt over the next six minutes put the Colonels ahead 67-58 with just 4:16 left on the clock. Two more deep three-pointers from Wizar and a Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) score inside capped the run.

The Eagles would not go away easy battling back yet again to cut the lead to one 71-70 when Anthony Parenti stole an inbounds pass underneath the Wilkes hoop and scored with :29 left. Eastern was forced to foul on the next possession sending Wizar to the line. Wizar hit one of two free throws giving Wilkes a two point lead with :25 remaining.

Wilkes fouled on the subsequent possession and Eastern hit one of two from the charity stripe setting up the final two sequences of the game. After an Eastern foul, Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) went to the line for Wilkes shooting the one-and-one. Jackson missed on the first and Eastern rebounded with a chance to win. Following a timeout, Eastern had one last chance at the win with eight seconds left, but a running jumper in the lane went off the rim and Wilkes escaped with its second conference victory of the season.

Wizar was on fire from beyond the arc finishing 7-for-10 from long range. Furst followed with 14 points, while Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) added nine tallies and two boards. Brendan Sheldon (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) cleaned up on the glass posting a game-high 13 rebounds.
