SURDY, ANISTRANSKI LEAD WILKES FIELD HOCKEY PAST ELMIRA 5-4
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) (two goals, one assist) and Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) (three assists) combined for eight points to lead host Wilkes University to a 5-4 victory over Elmira College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
 
With the win Wilkes improves to 5-8 overall while Elmira dropped to 1-12 after the defeat.
 
Elmira stormed out to a 2-0 lead after twenty-five minutes of play thanks to goals from Sarah McCaffrey and Alli Gilbert. Wilkes responded cutting the lead in half at 2-1 before the break when Stephanie Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) ripped a shot past Elmira keeper Julie Hockenberger at the 30:45 mark.
 
The Lady Colonels completed the comeback six minutes into the second half when Surdy scored the first of her two goals off an Anistranski assist. After another Soaring Eagles goal put Elmira back on top, Surdy answered with her second strike, a shot blasted from the top of the arc off a corner from Anistranski to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) gave Wilkes its first lead at 4-3 at the 56:37 mark netting a shot off a Surdy rebound. Three minutes later Savannah McCauley (York, PA/West York) provided the insurance tally scoring on a scrum in front of the net to up the advantage to two.
 
Elmira added a late goal at the 66:16 mark but could not find the equalizer as Wilkes held on for its fifth win of the season.
 
Wilkes held a commanding 30-8 shot advantage while garnering 16 penalty corners to Elmira's four attempts. Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) recorded the win in net for Wilkes finishing with two saves. Hockenberger made 16 stops for Elmira in the loss.
 
Wilkes returns to Freedom Conference play Saturday hosting Eastern University at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day at Schmidt Stadium.
