FRANKEL'S GAME-WINNER SENDS WILKES FIELD HOCKEY OVER EASTERN 2-1 IN KEY FREEDOM VICTORY

EDWARDSVILLE – Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit)'s goal with under five minutes to play broke open a 1-1 tie sending Wilkes University to a 2-1 victory over visiting Eastern University in a key Freedom Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes improves to 6-8 overall and evens its conference mark at 2-2 following the home win. Eastern drops to 6-8 on the year standing 2-2 in league games.

Keighlyn Oliver (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) put Wilkes up early with a goal off an assist from Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) at the 26:26 mark of the first half. Wilkes would take the 1-0 lead into the break controlling most of the frame in its offensive end.

Eastern answered at the 51:30 mark of the second half tying the game at 1-1 when Danielle Frasca shot in a rebound that hit the Wilkes post.

From there the teams traded opportunities before Frankel finished a shot off a scramble in front of the Eagles net at the 65:36 mark to give Wilkes the important Freedom victory.

Eastern held a 21-12 shot advantage in the game, while Wilkes garnered 15 penalty corners to the Eagles' six attempts.

Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) picked up the win in net for Wilkes finishing with a season-high 14 saves. Jennifer O'Neill made five stops in goal for Eastern.

Wilkes remains idle until next Saturday when the Lady Colonels host cross-town rival King's College at 11:00 a.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
