Wilkes Wrestling Finishes 2-1 at NY/PA Challenge
 
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University wrestling team finished 2-1 with wins over Nassau and Hunter College at the NY/PA Challenge Saturday afternoon at King's College.
 
Wilkes moves to 5-2 overall following the three-match event. Wilkes opened with a 22-16 win over Nassau followed by a 22-12 setback against New York University. The Colonels finished the day with a 22-17 victory over Hunter.
 
In the win against Nassau, Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) opened the Wilkes scoring with a 12-3 major decision at 125-pounds. Matthew Grossman followed with a 4-1 decision at 133 and James Palys (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East) finished off his opponent 6-4 at 149 as Wilkes led 10-4 after four bouts. Stephen Turner (Plains, PA/Coughlin) (157) and Levi Veppert (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) (184) both earned decision wins and Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) pinned his opponent in 2:17 at 197 to conclude the Colonel scoring in the six-point victory.
 
Two straight major decisions by Rea and Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) gave Wilkes a 8-0 lead over Hunter in the final match of the day. Andrew Tonnesen (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) claimed a fall in 3:40 at 149 to up the advantage to 14-4 after four bouts. Sean Lombardi (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) added a decision win (9-6) at 157 and James Ilvento (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) notched a technical fall win at 174 (18-3) to seal the Wilkes victory.
 
Rea, Fleck, Kieran Gerrty and Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) each recorded wins in the loss against NYU.
 
Wilkes returns to the mat Friday traveling to Elizabethtown, Pa. for a match against Elizabethtown College at 7:30 p.m.
