ALLENTOWN, PA – The Lady Colonels fell behind early in the first half and were unable to mount a comeback as they fell to #8 University of Scranton 60-43 in the first game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Wilkes suffers there first defeat of the season and falls to 2-1, while Scranton remains undefeated at 3-0.

Scranton opened up a 10 point lead four minutes into the first half when Meredith Mesaris hit a 3-pointer to put the Royals up 12-2.  Wilkes responded with a quick 5-0 run to trim the lead to seven after a jumper by Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic), foul shot by Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) and layup by Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall).  A pair of Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) layups trimmed the Royals lead to three 16-13 with 10:30 minutes remaining in the first half.
With the lead trimmed to just three points Scranton responded with a 9-0 run to put them up 25-13 with 7:10 to go in the half.  With the team trailing by 15 right before the half Stambone nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to trim the lead to 12 at 32-20.

Wilkes shot 33.3% from the field in the first 20 minutes of play and were led by Stambone who had nine on 4-of-7 shooting.  Scranton shot 43.8% from the field and pounded the glass outrebounding Wilkes 27-11.  Nine Royals offensive rebounds led to nine second chance points.  Mesaris filled the stat sheet for Scranton in the first half as she accounted for 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Wilkes was able to cut the halftime deficit to eight points (36-28) with 14:22 remaining in the game thanks to a quick 6-0 spurt after trading baskets for the beginning of the half.  Trailing by eight points was the closest the Lady Colonels would get for the remainder of the game as the Royals opened up an 18 point lead thanks to a 14-4 run that saw them lead 50-32 with 8:51 remaining in the game. 

Wilkes did not quit after going down 18 as they went on a 9-1 run of their own capped off by a Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) layup with 5:16 to go in the game.  Wilkes had a chance to trim the lead to single digits but Sofranko missed the front end of a one-and-one and Lia Disciascio corralled an offensive rebound on the next possession for Scranton and hit a dagger three to put Scranton back up 13.

Scranton made 39.3% of their shots while making eight three pointers and eight foul shots.  Wilkes shot 37.0% from the field making two threes and just one foul shot (1-for-7). 

Stambone led Wilkes with 16 points, while Brown chipped in with nine and five rebounds.  Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) helped on the glass as she pulled down nine boards for the Navy and Gold.  The Royals were led by Mesaris who finished with 18 points, six boards and four assists.  DiSciascio made four three pointers for a total of 12 points while grabbing nine boards and collecting five steals.

Wilkes returns to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament.  Wilkes will take Albertus Magnus at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
