The Lady Colonels defeated Albertus Magnus 82-79 on Saturday afternoon to push their record to 3-1 on the season.Albertus Magnus (1-2) jumped out to an early five point lead in the first four minutes of the game before Wilkes regained a 12-11 lead thanks to a Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) three pointer. Wilkes was up one 16-15 with 13:26 to go in the half before they went cold from the field missing seven straight shots. Albertus Magnus was able to go on a 10-0 run during the cold spell and led 25-16 with 8:14 to go in the half. Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) stymied the scoring drought with a three to bring the Navy and Gold back within six at 25-19. After an Albertus Magnus bucket Stambone went to the hole and drew an and-one layup brining Wilkes with five at 27-22 with 7:22 remaining in the first half. With 2:59 remaining in the first half Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) knotted the game at 35-35 when she scored a layup after the Lady Colonels forced a turnover on the defensive end of the court. Brown gave Wilkes the lead 37-36 when she scored another layup which helped to spark a 9-2 run to end the half that put Wilkes up 46-38 at the break.Wilkes shot very well from the field in the first half making 18-out-of-34 shots from the field including five three pointers. Stambone led all scorers with 11 followed by Mesaros' 10 and Brown's nine. Albertus Magnus shot 56.5 from the field and made 10-out-of-14 foul shots for the half. Olivia Bolden had 10 points and Olivia Sutherland nine to lead the Falcons at the break.The Falcons used a 15-9 spurt at the start of the second half to cut the deficit to two (55-53) with 14:07 minutes remaining in the game. With the lead trimmed to two Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was fouled on a layup she made and sank the ensuing foul shot to put Wilkes back up five. The Falcons responded over the next three minutes of play with a 5-0 run that tied the game at 60-60 with 10:22 remaining in the game. With the score knotted at 70 a piece Lady Colonels Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) came up with a huge steal and scored on a fast break layup to put Wilkes up 72-70. Brown pushed the lead to three when she converted a layup to make the score 75-72 in favor of Wilkes with 5:14 to go in the ballgame. The lead was extended to 82-77 thanks to a brown layup and foul shot; however, the Falcons made things interesting when they scored a layup to trim the lead to 82-79 with :26 seconds remaining in the game. Kate Thomas (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) missed a one-n-one at the line for Wilkes and the Falcons desperation attempt to tie the game was no good and Wilkes held on for the 82-79 win.Wilkes shot 48.5% from the field but struggled at the line making just 12 shots on 29 attempts (41.4%). Stambone led wilkes with 23 points on 9-for-20 shooting. Brown finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Smelas and Mesaros each scored 10 points in the victory. Wilkes unsung heroes may have been their bench players who outscored the Falcons bench 29-4 in the game. Albertus Magnus finished the game shooting 48.1% from the field connecting on five three pointers. They shot 75% from the foul line (24-out-32). Bolden scored 30 points and grabbed nine boards for the Falcons. Sutherland chipped in with 18, Alexa Riley 12 and Kelsey Pendagast 11.Wilkes returns to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel to Eastern University to open up Freedom Conference play on Wednesday, December 3.
