Wizar’s Hot Shooting Lifts Wilkes Over Rosemont in Home Debut 70-63

Wizar's Hot Shooting Lifts Wilkes Over Rosemont in Home Debut 70-63

WILKES-BARRE – Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) scored a game-high 23 points including five three-pointers to lead Wilkes University to a 70-63 victory over visiting Rosemont College in the Colonels home debut Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Wilkes improves to 3-1 overall following the win while Rosemont falls to 2-2 after the road defeat.

The teams traded baskets throughout the opening stanza before a 6-0 run capped by a Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) layup in transition gave Wilkes a 27-21 advantage with 2:18 left in the first half. Collin Farnham (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added another Wilkes transition layup as the Colonels held onto a slim 29-26 lead at the break.

Rosemont took the lead six minutes into the second half when Nadir Stukes scored in transition giving the Ravens a 38-26 edge with 14:29 on the clock. A trey from Wizar and another two-point score from the junior sharpshooter put Wilkes back in front 55-48 with 7:14 remaining.

The Colonel lead grew to twelve at 68-56 following back-to-back free throw makes from Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) and Wizar as Wilkes continued to put pressure on the Ravens defense from inside and outside the paint. Another Wilkes score put the Colonels ahead for good up 70-56 before both teams cleared their benches for the final forty seconds of play.

Wizar was efficient from the field finishing 8-for-15 including a 5-for-10 performance from behind the three-point arc. He added five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 32 minutes of action. Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) followed with 15 points including three three-pointers while hauling in seven rebounds and posting three steals on the defensive end. Hinkel enjoyed a fine all-around game finishing with seven points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.

Dom Scafidi was the lone Rosemont player in double figures posting 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting.

Wilkes continues its home stretch Tuesday hosting Elizabethtown College at 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday late next week.
