Cold Shooting Dooms Wilkes Women's Basketball at Eastern
 
ST. DAVIDS, PA – Visiting Wilkes University shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the field dropping an 88-49 decision at Eastern University in both teams' Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday night.
 
The Lady Colonels fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in league play following the defeat, while Eastern improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference games.
 
The Wilkes offense struggled throughout the first half scoring just 15 total points shooting 15.4 percent (4-26) from the field in twenty minutes of play. The host Eagles reversely had little trouble finding the bottom of the net shooting a blistering 50.0 percent (19-38) from the floor led by 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting from Emily Lavin. Eastern led 46-15 at the break.
 
Wilkes managed to find some rhythm offensively in the second half but could not cut the deficit below twenty points over the final twenty minutes of the game.
 
Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) led the Wilkes offense with 11 points. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) followed with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) finished with seven points and five caroms.
 
Lavin finished with a game-high 30 points not missing a shot in fourteen attempts (14-14) from the field. She added nine rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Kaitlyn Dougherty followed with 13 points and five rebounds, while Meghan Nowak contributed 12 points, 10 boards and two blocks.
 
Wilkes hosts Manhattanville College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
