Stambone's 28 Points Lifts Wilkes Women's Basketball Over Manhattanville 68-67

WILKES-BARRE – Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) poured in a game-high 28 points including the free throw to win the game as host Wilkes University posted a 68-67 Freedom Conference victory over Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Wilkes improves to 4-2 overall and evens its league mark at 1-1 on the season. Manhattanville falls to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference games.

The Lady Colonels built an eight-point lead at the break 37-29 thanks to nine tallies from Stambone and six points each from Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall), Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) and Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe). An offensive rebound and layup from Basile gave Wilkes a 29-21 advantage with 5:51 on the first half clock. The Valiants answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to two, but buckets from Stambone, Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) and another from Stambone closed out the half for Wilkes.

Wilkes kept its lead through the first ten minutes of the second stanza when Stambone nailed back-to-back three pointers putting the Lady Colonels up 56-48 with 10:39 remaining. Two free throws from Smelas and a put-back score from Basile continued the Wilkes edge 62-53 with just over five minutes left.

Manhattanville tightened its defense and crept back into the game late when Bri Pabon converted an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 67 with :46 remaining.

From there, Stambone was fouled on the Lady Colonel next possession sending the senior to the line for two shots. She missed the first, but delivered on the second giving Wilkes a one point lead with :9 left.  Pabon had a chance to win it for Manhattanville, but her shot went off the rim with :2 remaining and out of bounds as Wilkes secured the conference victory.

Stambone finished 10-of-23 from the field and 4-for-7 from behind the arc in 35 minutes of action. Basile added a career-best 12 points and ten rebounds, her first collegiate double-double. Brown finished with ten points and nine rebounds.

Ashley Raaf led Manhattanville with 17 points and three rebounds. Ashley Franklin and Alyson Caiazzo each contributed 13 points. Caiazzo claimed a game-high 18 rebounds in the loss.

Wilkes is off for a week before traveling to Juniata College on December 13th for a non-league matchup at 7:00 p.m.
