Steve Finkernagel Men's Wrestling 12/5/2014 7:12:00 PM Wilkes Wrestling Finishes Day One at Messiah Invitational Wilkes Wrestling Finishes Day One at Messiah Invitational GRANTHAM, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team finished day one action at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational Friday hosted by Messiah College. At 125-pounds, Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) moved into the semifinals with a decision win (2-0) in the first round followed by a pin in 4:29 in the second round and 17-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Rea will face Jesse Gunter of Baldwin Wallace in the semifinal match on Saturday. Two Colonels advanced to the semifinals at 133-pounds as rookie Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and junior Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) both went 3-0 with two pins and three extra point victories in their six combined matches. Grossmann pinned his first two opponents in 1:42 and 2:41 respectively before earning a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals. He will face Ryan O'Boyle of McDaniel in the semifinals tomorrow. Fleck used two straight technical falls (17-2 and 15-0) in his first two matches then claimed a 10-2 major decision to reach the semis. Fleck faces Ronny Hauser of No. 2 ranked UW Whitewater in the semifinals. At 149, James Palys (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East) moved into the semifinals of the bracket thanks to three straight pins on day one. He began with a pin in 1:06 in the first round, then followed with a fall in 3:38 in the second round and finished pinning his opponent in 2:19 in the quarterfinals. Palys will face Messiah's Chris Williamson in the semifinals Saturday. Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) advanced to the semifinals at 197-pounds using a pin in the first round followed by an 11-3 major decision in the quarterfinals. He will matchup against Brian Olson of Mount Union in the semifinal bout tomorrow. At 285-pounds, Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) was the final Colonel to reach the semifinals. He earned a 16-1 technical fall in his first match before pinning his opponent in 1:50 in the second round. Oberrender moved into the semis with a 9-3 decision in the quarterfinals. He will face Messiah's Isaiah Shipman of Messiah in the semifinals Saturday.
