WILKES MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKE TO THE ROAD TO FACE FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON, NJ – The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams will travel to FDU-Florham on Wednesday evening for a MAC Freedom Conference matchup.
The men (8-12, 3-7 Freedom) are coming off of their most impressive win of the season as they trounced Manhattanville College 98-75 on Saturday afternoon. Steve Stravinksi was lights out as he scored a career high 30 points shooting 10-for-16 from the field and making six 3-pointers.
The men's team is looking for their first road conference victory of the season as they enter the game with FDU 0-5. Sophomore
Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) is leading the team in scoring with 14.1 points per-game. Wizar is second in the Freedom with 58 made 3-pointers as he is shooting 39.2 percent from long range on the season.
Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) is solidifying himself as he is averaging 25.5 point per-game over his last two games. Stravinski is averaging 10.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per-game on the season. Stravinski's 53 made 3's is good for third in the conference. Senior
Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) is averaging 11.0 points and 4.8 boards per-game. Furst is shooting an efficient 53.3 percent from the field.
Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) is the Colonels fourth leading scorer with 8.8 points per-game. Wilkins is getting it done on the glass as he leads the squad with 5.3 rebounds per-game.
FDU-Florham men (11-10, 6-4 Freedom) are coming off of a 61-52 win vs. King's on Saturday keeping them in a four-way tie for second place in the Freedom Conference. John Flete leads the Devils with 16.4 points per-game. Flete is shooting 45.8% from the field and 36% from deep. Trevor Sykes drops 15.1 points and grabs 4.5 boards per-game. Kevin Furlong is the third Devils player to average double-figures as he is averaging 13.2 points per-game to go along with 6.1 rebounds of the glass. Furlong leads the team with 38 made 3-pointers. Will Green is the fourth leading scorer averaging 12.4 points per-game while leading the Devils on the glass pulling down 8.8 rebounds per-game
FDU men defeated Wilkes in the first matchup that took place at the Marts Center 65-54. Flete led the Devils with 22 points while Green posted a double-double 13 points and 13 boards.
Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) led the Colonels with 13 points while Jimmy Brackett dropped in 10.
The Lady Colonels (5-16, 2-8 Freedom) are looking to snap a two-game slide after falling to Muhlenberg College 62-59 on Monday evening in a non-conference game.
Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) and her 20.0 points per-game continues to lead the Freedom Conference. Stambone also leads the Conference with 54 3-pointers made.
Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) is a double-double machine as she leads the team with nine on the season. Brown is scoring 11.7 points per-game while nabbing a team high 9.3 boards. Brown leads the Lady Colonels with 44 steals while swatting 37 shot attempts.
Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) is establishing herself as a dominating center. Her 7.7 rebounds per-game are the second highest on the team.
Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and
Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) are continuing to play vital roles down in the low block. Edwards is pulling down 6.4 boards per-game while Smelas is averaging 5.2 rebounds a game.
The FDU-Florham women (21-0, 10-0 Freedom) enter the game ranked #7 in the country, after defeating King's 90-44 on Saturday. Reigning Freedom Conference player of the year Kyra Dayon leads the Devils averaging 14.1 points per-game. Dayon is second on the team in rebounding with 7.7 per-game and she has dished out a team high 71 assists. Dayon also leads the team in steals with 59. Rachel Groom is shooting a superb 59.8% from the field while averaging 11.9 points per-game. Groom is pulling down 6.8 boards per-game and has a team leading 15 blocked shots. Shalette Brown is the third leading scorer averaging 10.3 points per-game. Brown leads the team in rebounds with 8.7 boards per-game The Devils are averaging 82.5 points on offense and allowing opponents to score 55.7 points per-game.
The Lady Colonels trailed by four points at halftime in their first matchup before FDU outscored them by eight in the second half to go on and win 71-59 at the Marts Center. The 12 point win is the least amount of points the Devils have beat a Freedom Conference opponent by all season.
The women's game will tip at 6:00 P.M. followed by the men's game at 8:00 P.M.
