BIG FIRST HALF LEADS FDU-FLORHAM PAST WILKES 81-65

MADISON, NJ – Host FDU-Florham outscored Wilkes University 48-26 in the first half as they cruised to an 81-65 Freedom Conference victory Wednesday evening.

The loss drops Wilkes to 8-13 overall and 3-8 in Freedom play, while FDU improves to 12-10 overall, 7-4 in Freedom games. The victory puts FDU-Florham in a second place tie with Misericordia in the Freedom Conference standings heading into the final week of regular season play.

Wilkes opened up a five point lead (8-3) with 17:41 remaining in the half thanks in part to two three-pointers from Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) and Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), while Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) hit a two point jumper. Wilkes went cold for the next five minutes as FDU used a 13-0 run to go up 16-8 with 12:35 to go in the half. FDU extended the lead to 25-10 with 9:50 to play as once again the Colonels struggled to make shots.

Wilkes cut the lead to 27-17 with 6:43 remaining on an Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) jumper in the paint, unfortunately for the Colonels this is the closest they would get for the remainder of the game. Over the last 6:43 of the half, the Devils would go on a 21-9 run and enter the break up 48-26. Wilkes shot 10-for-33 (30.3%) from the field, 2-for-12 (16.7%) from deep while committing nine turnovers.  Jackson led the Colonels with eight points, with Wizar chipping in seven.  FDU was 14-for-27 (51.9%) from the field, 3-for-8 (37.5%) from three-point range and were aggressive in getting to the line as they made 17-of-21 (81.0%) foul shots.

The Colonels cut the lead to 16 early in the second half before the Devils went on a 12-0 run to put them up 63-35 with 14:22 to play in the game.  FDU built up a 32-point lead in the half; however, the Colonels did not pack it away as they continued to play and battled back to cut the lead to 14 before the final horn sounded with FDU winning 81-65.

iles shot 14-for-29 (48.3%) from the field, 3-of-7 (42.9%) from deep and a quality 80 percent (8-10) from the foul line.  The Devils were 12-for-26 (46.2%) from the field, 5-for-11 (45.5%) from long range and 4-for-8 (50.0%) from the line. The big advantage for the Devils was the 21 turnovers they forced and the 28 points they scored off of the turnovers for the entire game.

Furst led the Colonels with 13 points, while Devin Dunn (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and Jackson each scored 11.  Stravinski chipped in with eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds.

FDU had four players in double figures as Kevin Furlong led the Devils with 19 points on an efficient 8-for-14 shooting.  Trevor Sykes chipped in with 17, John Flete followed with 13 and Will Green posted a double-double finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Wilkes heads to the road on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. Freedom Conference contest at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa.
