DESALES HOLDS ON IN LOW-SCORING 51-47 WIN OVER WILKES MEN'S BASKETBALL
 
WILKES-BARRE – Visiting DeSales University saw three players reach double figures in a hard-fought, low scoring 51-47 win over Wilkes University Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
 
With the defeat Wilkes falls to 8-15 overall and 3-10 in league games. DeSales remains atop the Freedom Conference pushing its league mark to 10-3 and 16-8 overall.
 
DeSales held a slim four-point advantage at the break, 24-20, as both teams dug in defensive throughout the first twenty minutes.
 
After DeSales went up six in the first three minutes of the second half, the Colonels began a rally scoring three straight buckets tying the game at 29 with 16:16 on the clock. Pat Furst (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks West) score inside followed by a Nic Wilkins (Dushore, PA/Sullivan County) layup and Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) jumper to cap the 6-0 spurt.
 
After tying the game at 34 four minutes later, Wilkes took its first lead of the contest when Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) connected on a deep three-pointer with 10:58 left. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes with each taking the lead back multiple times. DeSales the built a four-point advantage with 4:13 on the clock as Mike Coleman canned a jumper in transition. Another Hartman layup on the end of a fast break followed another Bulldog score as Wilkes trailed by three, 49-46 with just over a minute remaining.
 
From there, Brendon Sheldon made one of two free throws on the Colonels next possession before Wilkes was forced to foul with :09 left down two. Cody Deal calmly sank both free throws to ice the game for DeSales giving the Bulldogs a two possession lead.
 
Stravinski led all scorers with 15 points and seven rebounds, finishing 4-for-9 from long range. Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) added nine points and three assists, while Hartman (7), Wilkins (7) and Furst (6) each contributed to the Wilkes offensive attack.
 
Coleman led DeSales with 14 points and four boards. Travis Bryan added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Kyle Hash chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
Wilkes concludes its 2013-14 season at home Saturday hosting cross-town rival King's College at 3:00 p.m. on senior day. Wilkes will honor its five senior members prior to tip-off.
