William Fletcher earned the 285-pound title at the Messiah Open Saturday FLETCHER WINS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AT MESSIAH OPEN; EIGHT COLONELS PLACE IN TOP SEVEN 2/8/2014 8:25:00 PM (Full Results) FLETCHER WINS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AT MESSIAH OPEN; EIGHT COLONELS PLACE IN TOP SEVEN GRANTHAM, PA – Wilkes University senior William Fletcher (Ottsville, PA/Palisades) was crowned the heavyweight champion at the Messiah Open as eight Colonels earned top seven finishes Saturday at the annual tournament. Fletcher began his title run with a pin in his opening match in 1:51 before claiming a 5-2 decision over Sean Twigg of Maryland. After pinning Maryland's Luis Beteta in 6:30 in the semifinals, Fletcher completed the championship run with a 2-0 decision Mike Spencer of York in the finals. Edwin Fiscal (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) and Corey Fleming (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) each placed at 133-pounds for Wilkes. The teammates squared off in the fifth place bout with Fleming claiming the match due to a medical forfeit from Fiscal. Fleming used a pin in 6:56 to reach the bout, while Fiscal opened the tournament with two decision wins and a fall before falling in the quarterfinals. Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) was the lone place finisher for Wilkes at 141-pounds after scoring a major decision (14-5) in the fifth place bout over York's Victor Signorelli. Fleck began the tournament with another major decision in his opening match followed by a 9-7 decision win in the quarterfinals before falling in the semis to eventual champion Ryan Diehl of Liberty. At 157-pounds, Stephen Turner (Plains, PA/Coughlin) earned seventh place finishing the day with a 13-0 major decision over George Baker of York. Phil Racciato (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) settled for fourth at 165-pounds using two straight pins to reach the third place bout before being pinned. Nicholas Lynch and James McNally (Scranton, PA/Scranton) each finished in the top seven at 174-pounds with Lynch posting a fourth place finish and McNally a sixth place spot. Lynch used an 8-1 decision win in his first match before falling in the semifinals. He then received a medical forfeit over McNally before falling the in third place bout. McNally could not finish the tournament forfeiting in his last two matches to settle for sixth. Alex Pullen (Salisbury, MD/Wicomico) was the lone finisher at 184-pounds starting the day with a pin of Bryson Neely of Thaddeus Steven before falling 6-2 in the second round. Pullen wrestled back with two straight pins to reach the fifth place bout where he fell 9-5. Wilkes returns to dual match play Friday when the Colonels look for the program's 800th win hosting No. 12 Ithaca College at 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center. Print Friendly Version
