Steve Finkernagel Eddie Metzger paced the Colonels with a goal and an assist on Sunday afternoon SECOND HALF SURGE CARRIES MEN'S SOCCER PAST MARYWOOD 8/31/2014 7:41:00 PM Box Score SECOND HALF SURGE CARRIES MEN'S SOCCER PAST MARYWOOD SCRANTON, PA -- With the score tied at one a piece coming out of the halftime break, the Wilkes men's soccer team scored three goals within the first ten minutes of the second half as they crusied to a 4-1 victory over the Pacers of Marywood.With the win Wilkes (1-1) picks up their first win of the 2014 campaign while Marywood falls to 0-1-1 on the short season.Playing against the wind for the entire first half Wilkes and the backline was able to prevent Marywood from getting on the scoreboard first, despite being out cornered 7-1.  In the 35th minute after a few near misses Wilkes was able to capitalize and put themselves up 1-0 when Mitchell Woodward (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) scored his first goal of the year on a beautiful one time volley, off of a Justin Weaver (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) serve to the backpost.  Four minutes later the Pacers were awarded a penalty kick.  Kris Kassel stepped up to take the spot kick and drilled it hard, low and into the side netting to even the score at one.Wilkes came out ready to go in the second half and took the outright lead at the 48:08 mark when Abdullah Albannay (Kuwait City, Kuwait/Abdullah Jaber) finished a rebound off the post.  Eddie Metzger (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) took the initial shot the hit the post and bounced straight to Albannay who was left wide open for the easy tap in.  Just three minutes later Eric McAnena (Horsham, PA/Abington) worked hard to get around the Pacers defense and found a cutting Metzger who was able to one-time side volley a shot into the side netting to put the Colonels up 3-1.  Four minutes after the third goal, Albannay was pulled down from behind on a breakaway inside the box resulting in a red card for Marywood and a penalty shot for the Colonels.  McAnena's initial penalty shot was saved however he followed his shot and was able to blast the rebound past the outreached hands of Marywood's goalkeeper Justin Sunseri.For the game Marywood held a slight advantage in shots 23-19, while the Colonels held a 14-10 advantage in shots on goal.  Patrick Loube (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) and Kyle Romm (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) combined to make nine saves on the afternoon for the Colonels.Wilkes heads to the road on Wednesday when they travel to Allentown, Pa. to take on Muhlenberg College.  Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Print Friendly Version
