Smelas Career Night Leads Wilkes Women's Basketball Past Misericordia 77-64

DALLAS, PA – Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) poured in a career-high 20 points to lead visiting Wilkes University to a 77-64 victory over Misericordia University Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.

Wilkes improves to 6-5 overall and moves to 2-1 in Freedom games while Misericordia remains winless at 0-14 standing 0-3 in league contests.

The victory marked the second straight season Wilkes has beaten Misericordia on the road after posting a 66-52 win last year.

Misericordia opened a 14-11 lead midway through the first half before a jumper from Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) and subsequent free throws put the Lady Colonels ahead on their next two possessions. Another layup from McFadden and transition score from Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) gave Wilkes its largest lead of the half 21-14 with 5:15 left.

Two Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) free throws kept Wilkes ahead before Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) scored inside the paint as the half came to a close with the Lady Colonels holding a 33-27 advantage.

Two quick buckets to start the second frame, both from Smelas, upped the lead to 37-27 with 17:54 on the clock. A layup from Stambone capped the 8-0 run to start the half as Wilkes held its largest lead of the game at 39-27 with 16:50 remaining.

Stambone added another score in transition and Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) connected on a jumper to push the run to 15-4 as Wilkes led 46-31 with 13:52 left in the game.

A Misericordia three-pointer cut the Wilkes advantage to 51-42 with 10:15 left, but buckets from Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) and a dagger trey from Stambone pushed the edge back to double-digits. Smelas added three straight scores to keep the Lady Colonels ahead for good over the final six minutes of play.

Smelas enjoyed the finest night of her career finishing 10-for-13 from the floor grabbing six rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Stambone followed with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor including one three-pointer. Basile added 11 points and 10 rebounds while Brown rounded out the Wilkes double figure scorers with 10 tallies and eight caroms.

Shelby Brochetti led Misericordia with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Wilkes continues its road Freedom stretch Saturday playing at Delaware Valley College at 1:00 p.m.
