Lady Colonels unable to dig out of first half hole, lose 65-48 at Delaware Valley
 
DOYLESTOWN, PA – Wilkes found themselves in a 38-24 first half hole, and despite playing a better second half they were unable to mount a comeback as they fell 65-48 on the road in Freedom Conference play.
 
Wilkes slips to .500 overall at 6-6 and 2-2 in the Freedom, while Delaware Valley rises to 7-8 and 2-2 in the Freedom.
 
Wilkes opened the game up with a 4-0 run before Delaware Valley responded with a 24-8 run to put them up 24-13 with 8:19 to go in the half.  Delaware Valley continued to build on their lead and led by as many as 16 with just :33 remaining in the first half.  Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored a layup at the buzzer to give the Lady Colonels some momentum heading into the break.
 
Basile and Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) scored the Lady Colonels first eight points in the second half as they trimmed the lead to ten at 42-32 four minutes into the second half.  Wilkes trimmed the lead to eight when Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) made a layup but a minute later Eireann Anastasi nailed a three-pointer to extend the Aggies lead to 11 at 47-36.  Wilkes scored just three points during an eight-minute span in the second half as Delaware Valley opened up the lead to 59-39 with six minutes to go in the game. 
 
Wilkes struggled from the field shooting just 29 percent (18-62) from the field.  They also missed 13 foul shot attempts on the afternoon.  Basile led Wilkes with 13 points and added six boards.  Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) posted her second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.  Leading scorer Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) was held to a season-low five points in the Lady Colonels loss.
 
Delaware Valley made 34.5 percent (19-55) of their shot attempts and connected on eight three-pointers.  The Aggies made 19-of-23 foul shots and had three double-digit scorers.  Brenna Coll led all scorers with 16 points and 12 boards, Anastasi scored 14 points including her 1,000th point in her career and Agatha Drozd poured in 13.
 
Wilkes returns to action tomorrow when they take on Moravian College in a non-conference tilt.  Game-time is slated to tip at 1:00 p.m. from the Marts Center.
