Wilkes Men's Basketball Drops 64-58 Decision Against Marywood

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University shot a season-low 33.8 percent from the field and struggled even more behind the line making only 16.7 percent of its shots from three-point land in a 64-58 loss against Marywood in the opening game of the 2015 Cross County Challenge at King's Scandlon Gymnasium Friday night.

Wilkes falls to 6-5 overall following the defeat while Marywood improves to 6-3 on the year after the win.

The teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of play before back-to-back Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) layups put the Colonels ahead 10-8 with 12:47 on the first half clock. Marywood used an 11-3 run over the next seven minutes of play to take back the lead 19-13 with 6:56 left in the half.
The Pacers lead grew to its largest of the half, 31-22, with 3:11 on the clock after a Shane Kellaher three-pointer. Marywood would settle for a 33-26 advantage at the break as neither team could find the bottom of the hoop over the final two minutes of play.

Five straight points to open the second half pushed the Marywood lead to 38-26 with 17:53 remaining. A Wilkes turnover and subsequent Pacer three-point play extended the lead to 44-31 just two minutes later prompting a Colonel timeout.

Wilkes responded using pressure defense and three transition scores capped by a John Goffredo (Bangor, PA/Pius X) trey to cut the Marywood lead to 44-36 with 12:20 left. Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) added a bucket inside as Wilkes only trailed by six on the ensuing Colonel possession.

Stravinski added his first three of the game and Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added a score inside the paint to bring Wilkes to within four, 49-45 with just over six minutes remaining. Brunner's two free throws cut the Pacers advantage to four 51-47 after two Marywood miscues in transition.

Two Pacer jumpers on back-to-back possessions pushed the lead back to 57-49 with just over two minutes remaining as Marywood held onto the advantage canning 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the non-league victory.

Stravinski topped Wilkes finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds. Mason Gross (Hughestown, PA/Pittston) added ten points and four rebounds off the Colonel bench.

Kelleher led Marywood with 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Colonels play Scranton tomorrow (Saturday) at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the round robin action at the Cross County Challenge.
