Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops 56-41 Decision to DeSales

WILKES-BARRE – Host Wilkes University shot a season-low 29.1 percent from the field dropping a 56-41 decision to DeSales University in a Freedom Conference matchup Wednesday night at the Marts Center.

Wilkes slips to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in Freedom games following the defeat. DeSales improves to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in league contests.

DeSales jumped out to a 13-4 lead midway through the first half as Wilkes struggled to find its rhythm offensively over the first ten minutes of the contest. Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) then started a furious 16-9 Wilkes run over the final ten minutes of the half when she drilled a deep three-pointer at the top of the key. Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) added two scores inside the paint and two more from the charity stripe as Wilkes trailed by just two, 22-20 at the break.

Another trey from Stambone early in the second half brought Wilkes to within one, 24-23, with 19:03 on the clock.  Four minutes later the senior sharp shooter canned a 15-foot jumper to tie the game for the first time at 30 with 14:32 left.

A quick 7-0 spurt from DeSales gave the visitors the lead back at 37-30 at the 12:11 mark. From there, the DeSales lead grew to as many as 16 points as the Bulldogs used several second chance opportunities to cash in from inside the paint.

Stambone was the only player to reach double figures for Wilkes finishing with 15 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Smelas followed with seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added nine points and four boards.

Megan Baird led DeSales with 12 points on four three-pointers. The Bulldogs held a decisive 52-39 edge on the glass including 17 offensive rebounds to just nine for the Lady Colonels.

Up next Wilkes takes to the road Saturday playing at No. 1 FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m. in Madison, NJ.
