No. 14 Wilkes Wrestling Finishes 3-2 at NWCA National Duals
 
FORT WAYNE, IN – The No. 14 Wilkes Wrestling team finished 3-2 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals Friday in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
 
Wilkes began the morning with a 35-9 win over University of Dubuque in round one taking eight of the ten bouts including five extra-point victories. Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) started the Colonels off strong pinning Joey Cisneros in 6:38. Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) followed with 2-0 decision win at 133-pounds and Pankil Chander (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) made it three straight with a 7-6 decision at 141-pounds giving the Colonels a 12-0 lead after three bouts.
 
James Palys (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East) pinned Kody Krenz in 3:33 upping the advantage to 18-0 before a decision win (3-2) from Sean Lombardi (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) at 157-pounds and a major decision from Stephen Turner (Plains, PA/Coughlin) (16-6) at 165-pounds. Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) earned a major decision (10-0) at 174-pounds and Levi Veppert (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) claimed a fall in 1:26 at 184-pounds to round out the Wilkes 35-point effort.
 
The Colonels matched up with No. 6 Wisconsin La Crosse in round two dropping a 28-13 decision to move into the consolation bracket. La Crosse took seven of the ten bouts with Wilkes wins coming at 125-pounds, 157-pounds and 285-pounds. Rea, Lombardi and Nick Dawson all earn victories for the Colonels in the match. Rea picked up his second extra-point victory with a major decision while Dawson pinned his opponent in :26.
 
The Colonels then wrestled through the consolation bracket winning two straight matches over St. John's (MN) 20-16 and No. 19 Luther College 19-15. Wilkes captured six of the ten bouts against St. John's including decision wins from Rea, Lombardi, Veppert and Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) and major decisions from Palys and Diesel to take the four-point victory.
 
The most exciting match of the day came against Luther as the teams went back and forth trading the lead throughout. After a decision win at 125-pounds by Luther, Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) earned a 10-8 sudden victory at 133-pounds to tie the match at 3-3. Another Luther decision win at 141 and subsequent decision victory from Wilkes' Josh Evans (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) at 149 tied the match for a second time at 6-6 through four bouts. Turner put Wilkes ahead with a major decision (12-3) at 165 followed by a Diesel 9-6 decision at 174 as the Colonels led 13-9 heading into the final three bouts.
 
Luther earned a pin at 184 to take a 15-13 lead into the 197-pound bout. From there, Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) (7-2) and Oberrender (3-1) earned back-to-back decisions to seal the win 19-15 setting up a match with No. 8 Coe College in the consolation quarterfinals.
 
Rea, Chander and Evans were the three lone decision winners for Wilkes in its final match of the day in a 29-9 loss against Coe.
 
Wilkes will remain idle until next Saturday when the Colonels wrestle in the Will Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus College. Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m.
