Women's Soccer Battles in 2-1 Double Overtime Loss
EDWARDSVILLE- The Wilkes University women's soccer team played a hard fought match, but were bested in double overtime by Fairleigh-Dickinson University-Florham (FDU) in its Freedom Conference-opener on Friday night at Schmidt Stadium to open homecoming weekend.
The Lady Colonels fell to 3-7-1 overall and 0-1 in Freedom play while the Devils improved to 6-5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference.
FDU struck first in the 16
th minute when Kristina Ragolia scored with Nicolette van Duysen assisting.
Wilkes tied the game in the 65
th minute when freshman forward
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) found freshman midfielder
Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) for her first collegiate goal.
The game remained tied through the rest of regulation and through the first overtime.
The Devils found the back of the net in the 106
th minute when Gabby Diaco headed in a shot off of a corner by Brittni Calleo for the victory.
The Lady Colonels held a 16-10 advantage in shots (9-6 on net), and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) made four saves in the game.
Wilkes returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Doylestown to take on the Aggies of Delaware Valley University for a 5 p.m. Freedom Conference match, and will return home on Saturday, October 17th when it will host King's College for a 3:30 p.m. Freedom Conference match on Senior Day.
