Surdy and Oliver Lead Field Hockey to Victory
EDWARDSVILLE- Sophomore forward
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) recorded two goals and three assists and sophomore forward
Keighlyn Oliver (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) scored two goals for the Wilkes University field hockey team in its 5-4 MAC Freedom victory over DeSales University at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels improved to 2-0 in MAC Freedom play and 7-4 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2 In Freedom play and 2-9 overall.
Surdy got Wilkes on the board in the second minute when she took a pass from freshman back
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and backhanded it in past the DeSales goalkeeper. Junior forward
Jenna Skrinak (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) increased the lead to 2-0 when she launched a shot in the net off of an assist by Surdy in the 19
th minute.
The Bulldogs cut the lead in half in the 26
th minute when Tess Luzi scored with an assist going to Kelly Meade.
Surdy struck again in the 33
rd minute when junior forward
Taylor Ryan (Spotsylvania, VA/Courtland) found her at the top of the circle for a backhanded shot that struck the crossbar and went in. The lead was pushed to 4-1 in the 44
th minute when a Surdy shot was saved by the Bulldogs goalkeeper and put in by Oliver.
DeSales cut the lead to 4-2 in the 53
rd minute as Chelsea Harding crossed a pass through the box and Meryah Harding dove and shot the ball into the lower left side of the net.
The Lady Colonels extended the lead in the 55
th minute when Surdy took a shot from the top of the circle that was deflected in by Oliver.
Harding struck two more times in the 55
th minute with an assist from Maggie Zaleski and the 75
th minute on a corner after time expired on Meade's second assist of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made two saves in the game.
Wilkes had a 23-8 advantage in shots attempted, an 11-6 advantage in shots on net, and a 16-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The Lady Colonels return to action on Tuesday when they will host Elizabethtown College for a 4 p.m. non-conference match at Schmidt Stadium.
