Women's Basketball Falls in Neumann Tournament Finale
ASTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team fell in the consolation game of the Neumann Tournament to Lancaster Bible College by a 62-44 final on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Lady Colonels to 0-2 on the season.
The Chargers started the game on a 5-0 run thanks to an opening three-pointer and two free throws. After Wilkes cut the lead to 10-7 with 5:46 following a layup by
Missy Oertner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), Lancaster Bible went on a 14-0 run to push its lead to 24-7 with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter. It would push the lead to 16 at 26-10 following a pair of free throws, which is how the first quarter would end.
Following a Wilkes layup with 7:03 remaining in the half, the Chargers used a 12-2 run to push the score to 38-16 to end the half.
The Chargers pushed their lead to a game-high 25 following a three-pointer with 4:30 remaining in the game.
The Lady Colonels were led by
Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) 14 points and 12 rebounds. Smelas was named All-Tournament for her efforts.
Lancaster Bible was led by Aubrey Folger's 24 points. Folger was joined in double figures by Katy Stover (20) and Krissy Pennell (16).
Wilkes had a 12-0 advantage in bench points.
The Lady Colonels return to action next Saturday when they travel to the University of Scranton for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
