WILKES-BARRE – The No. 5 Wilkes University wrestling team finished 1-2 at the annual John Reese Duals Saturday afternoon held in the Marts Center on the campus of Wilkes University.
 
Wilkes fell 20-17 to York (Pa.) to open the day before dropping an 18-16 decision to Stevens Tech in its second match. Wilkes then secured a 30-18 victory over Rowan College (Gloucester) to conclude the day's wrestling action.
 
Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) opened the match against York with a major decision at 125-pounds to give Wilkes a 4-0 lead. Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) followed with a 9-5 decision at 133 followed by two decision wins by Pankil Chander (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) (141) and Josh Evans (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) (149) to give Wilkes a 13-0 lead after four bouts. York responded with two decision wins and a major decision in the next three bouts to cut the Colonel lead to 13-10. After a major decision from Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) at 174, York scored a major decision at 197 and fall at 285 to secure the victory.
 
Fleck, Grossmann and Evans all recorded wins for Wilkes in the early bouts against Stevens as Wilkes led 10-3 after four bouts. A decision by Diesel and Alex Pullen (Salisbury, MD/Wicomico) rounded out the Colonel scoring as Stevens picked up wins at 157, 165, 174 and 197 to edge the decision in their favor.
 
Wilkes opened its final match with Rowan with three straight forfeit wins at 125, 133 and 141 before Rowan scored wins in the next four bouts. Diesel pinned his opponent in 3:15 at 184 and Zachary Faust (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R. Memorial) received Wilkes' fourth forfeit as Wilkes earned its first dual match victory of the season.
 
Wilkes makes its 2015-16 home dual match debut Friday night hosting Elizabethtown College at 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
