Wilkes Men's Basketball Rolls to 68-50 Win Over PSU Abington in LVC Consolation
ANNVILLE, PA – Senior
Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) led three Colonels in double figures pouring in a team-high 19 points to lead Wilkes University to a 68-50 victory over Penn State Abington in the consolation game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley College on Saturday.
Wilkes improves to 2-1 following the win, while PSU Abington remains winless at 0-4 on the year.
Wilkes trailed early in the game until a
Zachary Walser (Marcellus, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) layup put the Colonels ahead for the first time up 10-9 with 12:17 left in the first half. Two treys from Wizar and a layup from
Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) pushed the Wilkes lead to 25-10 with just over six minutes left in the half. PSU Abington then used a 10-3 run over the final four minutes of the frame to trail 31-28 at the break.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first eight minutes of the second stanza before Wilkes began its run to push open the game taking a double digit lead. Scores from
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional), Brunner and
Clay Basalyga (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) put Wilkes ahead by eight, before Wizar connected on back-to-back three-pointers with just over seven minutes left that gave the Colonels a 54-41 lead.
PSU Abington would not go away lightly, cutting the advantage back down to eight over the next three minutes, but another trey from Wizar and six straight free throws over the final two minutes sealed the non-league win for Wilkes.
Wizar finished 5-for-15 from the field including five three-pointers while adding six rebounds. Brunner came off the bench to score 14 points and grab six rebounds while Walser added ten points and three boards.
Devin Jones led all scorers for PSU Abington finishing with 23 points on 8-for-31 shooting from the floor.
Wilkes continues its road stretch Tuesday traveling to Elizabethtown College for a contest at 7:00 p.m.
