Wilkes Basketball Squads Host DVC Saturday on Senior Day

WILKES-BARRE – With just three Freedom Conference games remaining on the schedule, the Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams welcome Delaware Valley College to the Marts Center on Saturday on Senior Day.

The women's game begins at 1:00 p.m. with the men's contest to follow at 3:00 p.m. Senior members of both squads will be honored prior to the tip of each game.

The Wilkes women enter the game with a 9-11 overall record standing 4-7 in league play, just two games out of the final postseason spot in the conference. Wilkes dropped a 46-40 decision at DeSales on Wednesday in the teams' worst shooting outing of the season (20.0 percent from the field).

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) tops the squad averaging 16.6 points and 3.1 rebounds hitting a team-best 33 three-pointers this season. Stambone remains in third place on the school's all-time scoring (1,566 points) list and needing 105 points to pass the leader Diane Kendig (1,671 points). Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) follows with 10.2 points and 7.6 rebounds while Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) adds 9.1 points and 5.4 boards per-game.

Wilkes is averaging 62.8 points per-game while allowing 67.5 points per contest. Wilkes fell 65-48 to Delaware Valley in Doylestown, Pa. in mid-January in the teams' first meeting this season.

The Aggie women own an 11-11 overall mark standing 6-5 in Freedom play after posting a 75-57 win at Misericordia on Wednesday. Delaware Valley holds the fourth and final postseason spot entering the game Saturday.

Brenna Coll leads the Aggies offensively with 16.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per-game. Eireann Anastasi follows with 15.5 points and 3.1 rebounds hitting 37 three-pointers on the year. Brittany Wood chips in with 9.5 points and a team-best 39 three-pointers made.

Delaware Valley averages 66.1 points per-game while yielding 62.3 points per-contest.

The Colonel men remain in the hunt for a postseason spot with three games left (two at home) entering the game with a 10-12 overall record standing 5-6 in league play after a tough 65-63 loss at DeSales on Wednesday. Wilkes is tied with Eastern (5-6) for fifth place and trails fourth place King's (6-5) by one game with a matchup with the Monarchs coming in one week.

Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) continues to lead the Colonels attack averaging 14.9 points on 63 three-pointers (34.8 percent from long range). Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) follows with 14.2 points hitting a team-high 65 treys (39.2 percent from long range) on the season. Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) adds 11.2 points and 5.5 rebounds from his forward position through 22 games.

Wilkes is averaging 72.1 points per-game while giving-up 71.4 points per-contest. Wilkes fell 68-54 in Doylestown, Pa. in the squads' first meeting this season on January 17.

The DVC men are in second place in the Freedom Conference owning a 13-9 overall record and 8-3 mark in league games after falling 72-63 in overtime at first place Misericordia on Wednesday.

Chris Moran tops the Aggie attack averaging 14.6 points and 8.3 rebounds. Francis Arnold follows with 14.4 points and 4.0 assists per-game. Shooter Nick Sullivan contributes 10.6 points shooting a blistering 42.9 percent from behind the arc (49 made three-pointers).

Delaware Valley averages 73.4 points per-game while yielding 71.2 points per-contest.
