Lady Colonels Wear down Penn State Hazleton in Second Half En Route to 65-47 Win

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes outscored Penn State Hazleton 43-27 in the second half as they pulled away late for a 65-47 non-conference win on Sunday afternoon.

Wilkes picked up their 10th win of the season and now stand at 10-12 on the year while PSU Hazleton drops to 17-5.

Neither team could get anything going in the first half as both teams missed numerous shots and turned the ball over on multiple occasions.  Wilkes led at the break 22-20 despite making only 19.4% (7-36) of their shots and turning the ball over 10 times.  Wilkes was 2-for-12 (16.7%) from beyond the arc and 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the foul line.  The Lady Lions shot 26.5% (9-34) from the floor and 11.1% (1-9) from three-point range in the first half, committing a total of nine turnovers.

The Lady Lions opened up the 2nd half on a 6-0 run to take a 26-22 lead with just under 17 minutes left in the game.  Wilkes responded quickly however with a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 31-26 with 14:05 left on the clock.  At the halfway mark in the 2nd half Wilkes was holding onto a 39-34 lead before breaking the game open with a 17-4 run that saw them go up 56-38.  PSU Hazleton trimmed the lead to 13 late before Wilkes cashed in on same late buckets to finish the scoring at 65-47.

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) led the Lady Colonels with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Stambone sits just 59 points away from the all-time scoring record with two games remaining.  Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) finished with eight points and 12 rebounds while swatting away three shots.  Kate Thomas (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) hit two three-pointers off the bench and finished with eight points while Nicole Farrell (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) scored a career high seven points.  Wilkes shot 47.1% (16-34) in the second half finishing the game shooting 32.9% (23-70).  13 different players scored for the Lady Colonels to go along with a 53-48 rebounding advantage.

Taylor Cannon led the Lions with 13 points and 14 rebounds.  Stephanie Guevara finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and four assists in the loss.  Leading scorer and rebounder Alexis Daly was held to just five points and four points before fouling out midway through the 2nd half.  PSU Hazleton shot 26.2% (16-61) from the field, 16.7% (2-12) from deep and 59.1% (13-22) from the charity stripe.

Wilkes concludes their home schedule Tuesday night when they take on #4 ranked and defending National Champs FDU-Florham at 6:00 p.m.
